Kentucky 80

Kentucky 80 is
Calloway County's newest four-lane highway. The eastern
portion from Murray to Aurora has been completed for a couple of
years. The western portion from Murray to Mayfield is under
construction as well as the section through the Land Between The
Lakes. The Cadiz-Canton section won't see dirt turned until
2011.
A 12-mile
section of Kentucky 80 has now opened between Mayfield and
Coldwater. The section between Coldwater and US 641 is
expected to open late 2008 or early 2009. Eventually the
highway will run parallel to Kentucky 121 North, linking Mayfield,
Murray, and Bowling Green with a major four-lane highway. The
highway will take a large chunk of the estimated 5,000 to 7,000
vehicles a day off the outdated Kentucky 121.
The Kentucky
80 portion through Land Between The Lakes will cost over $300 million
is currently underway.
This project is particularly significant because it will replace two
large bridges crossing Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The
bridges were built in 1931 and need to be replaced. The
project will enhance tourism significantly in the area, partly
because the bridges and highway (the LBL portion) will have a unique
look designed aesthetically to the natural surroundings. The
bridges are slated to begin construction in 2010 or 2011. For
details on this project, visit
www.lakebridges.com.
Local and
regional officials are particularly excited about this project
because of the potential impact on industry and tourism.

complete.
